Choosing the Right Bicycle — A UK Buyer's Guide
Choosing the Right Bicycle — A UK Buyer's Guide
Buying a bike is one of the best investments you can make for your health, commute, and leisure time. With so many types available, it helps to start with a clear idea of where and how you'll be riding.
Road Bikes
Road bikes are built for speed and efficiency on tarmac. Drop handlebars, narrow tyres, and a lightweight frame put you in an aerodynamic position for covering distance quickly. Ideal for sportives, commuting on good roads, and long-distance touring.
Mountain Bikes (MTB)
Mountain bikes are designed for off-road riding on trails, gravel, and rough terrain. Wide, knobby tyres, suspension forks (and often rear suspension), and flat handlebars give you control and traction where road bikes can't go. Hardtails (front suspension only) are lighter and lower maintenance; full-suspension bikes absorb more trail chatter.
Hybrid Bikes
Hybrid bikes combine elements of road and mountain bikes — flat handlebars for an upright position, medium-width tyres for versatility, and a comfortable geometry. Perfect for commuting, leisure riding, and light trails.
Gravel Bikes
Gravel bikes are drop-bar bikes with wider tyre clearance, relaxed geometry, and often disc brakes. They're designed for mixed-surface riding — tarmac, gravel tracks, and light off-road. Increasingly popular for adventure cycling and bikepacking.
Getting the Right Size
Frame size is the most important factor in bike fit. Most manufacturers provide size guides based on your height and inside leg measurement. When in doubt, visit a local bike shop for a proper fit — a correctly sized bike is far more comfortable and efficient.
