Choosing the Right Bicycle Tyres and Inner Tubes — A UK Buyer's Guide

Whether you're commuting through city streets, tackling muddy trails, or clocking up miles on country roads, your tyres are the single most important contact point between you and the road. Choosing the right bicycle tyre — and keeping a spare inner tube handy — can make the difference between a smooth ride and a frustrating puncture on the roadside.

Understanding Tyre Sizes

Tyre sizing can be confusing, but the key numbers to know are the diameter and width. Road bikes typically use 700c tyres in widths from 23mm to 32mm, while mountain bikes use 26", 27.5", or 29" tyres ranging from 1.9" to 2.6" wide. Hybrid and commuter bikes often fall in between. Always check your frame's clearance before sizing up.

Tread Patterns — What Do You Actually Need?

  • Slick or semi-slick — ideal for road and commuting, low rolling resistance
  • Knobby — essential for off-road grip on loose or muddy terrain
  • Mixed tread — a versatile option for riders who do a bit of everything

Clincher, Tubeless, or Tubular?

Most cyclists use clincher tyres with a separate inner tube — easy to fit and repair. Tubeless tyres are growing in popularity for their puncture resistance and ability to run lower pressures. Tubular tyres are mainly used in racing and require specialist fitting.

Inner Tubes — Don't Get Caught Out

Always carry a spare inner tube that matches your tyre size. Check the valve type too — Presta (narrow, common on road bikes) or Schrader (wider, like a car tyre valve, common on MTB and hybrids). A mismatched valve and rim hole is a surprisingly common mistake.

When to Replace Your Tyres

Replace tyres when you notice cracking in the sidewall, visible wear indicators, or frequent punctures in the same spot. Inner tubes should be replaced rather than repeatedly patched once they've had more than two or three repairs.
